October 31st - November 4th

Welcome to November!

Conference month. Please sign up on the Conference post for your Fall conference time. I will be sending home a reminder notice this Friday, November 4th with your date and time you have selected from the Google Form.

Students are working on their Book Report at home. They can use the same book for their Reading Menu homework this week as well. In class they will be share and doing some prewriting on what they will have as their final draft of the book report. 

We have completed The Chocolate Touch novel unit, and will be doing a story in our Basal Reader this week.

Students will be reading the story Dogzilla in their reading textbook. The vocabulary/spelling words are a challenge this week. Students should spend some more time with them this week.

Math

We are working on multiplication for the next few chapters. The students spent last week learning that multiplication is repeated addition and can be figured out using arrays. This week the students will learn more about the commutative property and how it is in multiplication just as it was in addition. On Friday, November 4th we will be having a Chapter four math test. This is a short chapter. I will be having some pop quizes for the next few weeks to test the students on the multiplication facts. They should be studying them nightly with flashcards. The students should learn up to the times 12. Zero, one, two, five, ten, and eleven will be tested first.

This week we will be finishing up the third Chapter in Science. Our Science Unit A test has been moved to Monday for more review time.

Social Studies
Next week we will be starting Social Studies, and taking a break from Science. We will be starting with California Regions. 

Costume Parade

Monday, October 31st will be the Northwood Costume Parade at 8:30 a.m.
Students will come to school in their costume and then change into their common dress clothes after the parade.
They will not spend the day in costume.
Please wear your common dress under your costume, or bring it to school in a separate bag.
Parents and family are invited to watch the parade on the blacktop playground at 8:30 a.m.
Parents please stand outside of the circle of classes to watch the parade.
Costumes need to be appropriate for school.
No weapons
No blood or gore
Our class will be having a small popcorn party at the end of the day. Students do not need to bring anything. It will be a no sweets event.

Conferences

Hello Parents!

Conference week is coming up soon. I have created a Google Form to have you sign up for a time spot. I will be sending home a form with a reminder and a spot if you have questions. Please be on time for your scheduled meeting to keep the day moving for everyone.

Reminder that during conference week students will be getting out at 1 o'clock. Conferences start on Wednesday, November 9th. There will be a morning time for November 10th, but the teachers have a meeting after school, so no conferences will be held that day other than the morning spot. We also do not have school on Friday, November 11th.

Conferences have been scheduled for 25 minutes per person.

Thursday and Friday we review and use the words in class.  The following Monday we will have a Wordly Wise test. We will be doing one section every two weeks. This gives us more time to work with the words and their meanings. 

MathThis week we will be having our Chapter 3 Math test. Monday is a review day, and Tuesday the students will take the test in class.  After we finish Chapter 3 we will be moving in to multiplication for a while. Chapter 4 and 5 deal with all multiplication. Students are encouraged to be working on their multiplication math facts. They will be having a mini quiz throughout the week to test their times tables.

Tuesday:
NO Math homework - Due to the test

Wednesday:
Chapter 4-1 Multiplication as Repeated Addition

Thursday:
Chapter 4-2 Arrays and Multiplication 

Science
Students are working in their last section of Unit A - We will be having a Science test on Monday, October 24th on Chapter 1. Friday, October 28th will be Chapter 2. 

In class they will be working on Organisms from a Long Time Ago.


Don't forget to keep working on the book report. Students can use the book report book for their Reading Menu activities. 

Book Report Project

Students will be starting a book report next week that they will be doing in class, and reading the book at home for homework. Students have chosen an acceptable non-picture book to read and do a writing project. Students will be presenting their book report to the class on November 14th.

Students can use the Flow Map Thinking Map or a 6 square fold to do their visual summary of the story. 

Vocabulary Words: If the student is reading the book and they find a word that they are not familiar with they will write or type on a piece of paper the word, page number, and sentence that it is used in.

Northwood PTA is hosting the Annual Harvest Festival on October 21, 2016.

This week we will be doing out District Benchmark in Math. This is going to focus on Chapter 11 Geometry and Chapter 1 Place Value Numeration. This is online during class time and will not be an outside of school assignment. 

The Chocolate Touch
In class students have been working on their reading project on the story The Chocolate Touch. We have been working on vocabulary, comprehension, and some writing along with this story. There will be an art project later with this novel unit as well.

Science
Students completed their Animal Habitats projects two weeks ago, but are still learning more about the environments and what can cause change in them. We are on Chapter 2 learning about how animals compete with each other for food, water, and shelter. As well as how humans and nature can change an environment.

Students are working still in Reading on the novel study of "The Chocolate Touch" by Patrick Skene Catling. They will be creating a portfolio of activities, art, and writing for this project that will go home when they have completed the novel. 

In Science we continue to learn about our animal habitats, and how they compete with each other for survival. 

In math we are still in Chapter 3 Using Place Value to Add and Subtract. Included in this chapter is place value blocks, word problems, and estimation. Students need to practice their rounding skills. 

In our class this week we started on Scholastic News a wonderful supplemental program that deals with Social Studies, Science, reading, and a whole lot more. When we finish the magazine in class students can take it home.

October 3rd - 7th

Welcome to October! Here's hoping it starts to have October weather. :) 

Monday: We have the Watershed assembly walk through where students will learn about the water system in our area.  

Thursday: Today is our FIRST School Spirit Day! It is TEDDY BEAR DAY! Students are encouraged to bring their favorite stuffed animal to school for the day. 

Friday: Friday is Picture Day! You can bring your completed order forms to school. We will be taking our class photo and individual pictures as well. 

I am in the process of grading the student's Chapter 2 math test and will return that to you as soon as possible. Thank you.
